Before class

Lifeguarding Prerequisites

We offer Lifeguard Certification Classes in the Spring, Fall, and Winter. During the cooler months, classes are held in an indoor pool.

Coursework will include physical exercise.  If you have a medical condition or disability, or if you have any questions about your ability to participate fully in this course, please discuss them with your physician or healthcare provider before you register.

Students must pass a prerequisite swimming test on the first day (see below) in order to continue and be 15 years old by the last day of the class to become Redcross Certified.  Certification does not guarantee employment.

Requirements before Class

Prerequisite Swimming Test

This includes a 300-yard (12 laps) swim test and a surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Once surfacing, the student must swim 20 yards on their back before returning to the starting point. Both hands should be holding the object at all times while keeping your face at or near the surface of the water. Time stops when you exit the water.

Online Instruction

Each student will be required to complete online coursework 48 hours before the start of their class. A downloadable manual is found below.
